Greed I think. Want want want...give me, give me, give me.
Really its very sad that so many people are so unhappy. They cant be satisfied with what they have they will hurt others just to get what they want. Its a real sickness in this country of so much? Don't you think?

I should have expected this question from a person of your background (just going by your name).. In very simple terms it would be dubbed as our innate greed as someone had written here, but he did not go further to analyse it.. Contentment is a very great quality that an average person is not likely to gain.. But that does not answer the point fully..
The subject can be studied from various critical angles.. but I will restrict to one ancient perception of this phenomenon in man (since it is unlikely to be covered even in the forthcoming answers)!
We all want to possess all that is good in the world.. hear all good about ourselves... be the beauty of the world.. (do not tire seeing our face in the mirror however blemished it may be).. and behave seemingly strangely..
In other words, we wish to be the owner of all, good of all, beauty of all... the qualities we normally attribute to the God... This is the clue to the ancient perception (rather clarificaiton) to this phenomenon of man earning to be God since he is really made of that (divine) stuff
Really humans - the intelligent creature in the universe - is capable of doing anything (all powerful) - say, have we not seen people dragging a multi-tonne bus tied to the hair; or braving the himalayan chill with bare bodies, just to cite some examples?)..
(s)he is all compassionate - what Budha and Jesus demonstrated in real life.. Hence did people like the Budha preach that we could reach the highest consciousness - where wisdom, beauty and power shine forth - by cultivating some qualities..
To attune to that stage of excellence we need some refinement.. and so the quality is not seen in most of us and some express some extraordinary qualities due to some aspect of refinement (like deep concentration, patience and confidence) and the rarest of rare exhibit the divine qualities in full due to total refinement of their mind..
As such, in essence, the sense of discontent - present not merely in the poor and the needy, but the greatest billionaires on earth - is not a curse in the least but the vestige of the great power we all inherit ... and which reminds us the potential of really reaching that great stage of Godhood... the highest wisdom, power and beauty (Sathyam Shivam and Sundaram) bereft of the illusory limitations we supposedly suffer!

cos expectations are high and outcome is nothing so people feel dissatisfied. If they get what they want then definitely they will be satisfied. Moreover, there should be a feeling of contentment which people don't have,...if u are contended then u will work harder to achieve your target and that will lead to satisfaction.

Good question, sometimes I try to remember there are people who have it way worse healthwise or poverty but it doesn't really seem to help. Sometimes I wonder if I'll ever be happy. Partly I get unhappy because I grew up in a wealthy environment and I've gone downward since then.

hi,
becoz that a contradiction to the most basic, underlying ,unchangable facet of human tendency.if you ask me ,one should never be satisfied with what one has ,should always asks for more, don;t get me wrong there, but the most magical part of the game is one can dream for more yet be satisfied with what one has,its just about mindpower & balance, surity about the way you think, & most importantly how you want to think.the mind has immense capacity our mistake we think about things like satisfaction, attainment os stress free life as something beyond ourselves.....its afterall not about wanting more its all about thinking, believing & balancing.

this is a theory i actually made myself about this question
imagine u playing bowling and u got a score of let's say 30 each time you played, you definitely want to score more the next time you play, and let's say you scored 80 and you're happy, and you see your best buddy scoring 120, the next time you play you will want to score more and more, people are seldom satisfied with where they stand, they will just be satisfied for a period of time till they want more

It is called inner drive. Some people have it and others don't. That is why you get achievers and losers.
