Lived there for 32 years and left because of crime.

Majority of the country is 3rd world, with some 1st world commercial clusters that are moving to 2nd world and beyond.....

It´s a beautiful country with a lot of problems.

To answer your last question Darren, on how they treat people,
some South Africans tend to try and solve problems by name calling.
(Witness Malan´s response.)
I grew up in an Apartheid era with a lot of hate all round and there still remains a lot of residual issues.
I never wanted to get caught up in that mentality of hate and I stick firm to my beliefs.

I want to tell people the facts, and a lot of South Africans are suggesting images of a beautiful, peaceful country, a country of milk and honey, with as much crime as anywhere else , however this is not the case and it is irresponsible to misinform visitors and researchers of the significant problems that South Africa has.

It has as many (if not more) murders as in Iraq, and that is a war zone, and 3 or 4 times as many rapes, and yet many people believe that these already sickeningly high crime statistics are being watered down - as is suggested on some of the links I have shown you.

At the end of the day the best is to do your own research and come to your own conclusions, I have supplied you with some options, but those that can´t back up their Utopian promises prefer us (the realists) not to supply you with any information.

Hope this helps.

P.S. The name "Malan" is very common in the old Apartheid government and amongst it´s supporters (fact), and hence the irony of the racist name slinging had me in stitches this morning, thanks for that.

The first answerer is a racist, so it'll be a very good idea to ignore his views. SA is a developing country with a first world as well as third world part. It's an incredibly beautiful country with amazing people and great diversity. It does experience lots of problems such as crime and unemployment... SA however is the economic giant in Africa with one of the most developed financial structures in the world.
