Down, lid closed.
When you flush water is airborne, can end up all sorts of places, mmmm toilet water on your toothbrush anyone.
Feng shui says that the open mouth of the toilet pulls energy from your space.
Open toilets are attractive play areas for kids and drinking vessels for dogs, probably not the best idea.
It isn't about men and women people, some men sit to pee and even men who don't, have to sit down at least part of the time. So it just makes sense to keep seat and lid down.

The top of the toliet seat should be down at all times. I know about the fight against man and woman over the seat but facts are this. They did a study and took toothbrushes after leaving the toliet seat up for a week.Against leaving it down. This is the lid I'm talking about. The toothbrushes actually had germs on it that came from the toliet. When leaving the lid down there were fewer. I always keep my toliet lid down and keep my toothbrushes as far away from it as I can. So I think that should answer your question.hahaha

As`a rule, toilet seats should always be down, this is very important, if you have young children or pets. They both often like to drink or play in the toilet bowl, and could either pick up or pass on disease.
Toilet bowls should be cleaned with disinfectant often and if you were to put this in the toilet bowl and then an unsuspecting child or pet, should drink or play in it, then it could lead to serious problems.

Usage[edit]
The seat is generally lifted when a man stands to urinate, or while cleaning the toilet. The issue of men leaving the seat up or putting it back down after use, particularly for the benefit of women, is a perennial topic of discussion and light humor, with it often being argued that leaving the toilet seat up is more efficient, but putting it down is more considerate.[1][2] If present, the lid is frequently left open, but it can be closed to prevent small items from falling in, and to reduce the spread of germs and odors when the water is aerosolized on flushing.[3]

Me as the woman that I am would much prefer the toilet seat down of course not only is it safer , cleaner, and more considerate for us because you men sometimes dont aim right when using the toilet to urine. You leave it all wet and very unsanitary and inconsiderate of anyone to this.So you men of course put it up when using the toilet to urinate and then Down when Done. Thank you very much.

It depends on whether or not you live in a house where there are women...if you have a woman in your house then the seat should be down and clean! If it's just you then I'd say do as you please...

I'm a guy so I put it up to pee then I put it back down, not because there's a woman in the house (I'm single) but it's just habit.
