We don't have a choice to use or not use the sun as it is just a part of the solar system. Whether one likes it or not, the sun is going to rise and set every day, and depending on the season, one can't escape the impact of it in varying degrees! Okay, SON, that perhaps explains in brief what you want to know more at the point where you are stuck with the SUN!

People have been using the sun to dry fish/meat and tan hides for thousands of years. You might think of it as one of the original preservatives.
It would seem that many of the people here are stuck on what the sun does for the Earth and nature...as opposed to how humans have utilized its energy to get work done. I'm guessing that's exactly the kind of thing you were looking for...and I'm also guessing that generating electricity from solar energy was pretty obvious to you already.

Basically we use the sun for mainly an energy source, and as a guidance. Energy we use from the sun comes in the form of sunlight which we use to support all life on earth, such as animals and plants and humans through photosynthesis, and for essentials such as for light and heating. As a guidance, the sun controls the time of day on earth as well as the climate and weather.

It grows plants, Plants combine sunlight with chlorophyll for photsynthesis. We plant the plants in our gardens so we use the sun for that. We also use solar power to generate electricity. This is especially true in space, where sunlight is captured without the interference of the atmosphere to cloud up the power of the sun.

sun burns, tans, solar panels for electricity, to see, and a whole lot of other things it does for us like weather, heating of the planet, creating oxygen with plant activity every thing on Earth is indebted to the sun. Without it we would be a frozen body of rock.

Dude. All life on Earth is dependant on the energy of the Sun to sustain the food chain.
Plants eat the Earth and Sun, herbavores eat plants, carnivores eat herbavores.. and we eat everything. :D
Solar Power, too.
