Good promotes life. Evil kills or destroys.

But come to think of it, isn't life a balance of the two? Something that destroys eventually promotes life?

The concept of good and evil is a western concept of dichotomy of reality. There is also similar concept in eastern, particularly chinese philosophy, looking at it as ying and yang. One is not to be chosen over the other. But a balance would create harmony.

Can philosophy really decide on good and evil? wouldn't it be a question of positive and negative results in regard to a specific individual, animal, society, or such.

Good and evil are issues of morality. These belong in the religious section.
You never see a lion stop another lion and discuss the merits of killing another animal for food do you? (even a human) Thus good and evil issues are human morality issues--religious issues.

Thus, Buddhist have their definition and why they reached it; in Japan for example this had the effect in the past where everybody did what was best for the family because if they were cast out, they hadn't anywhere else to be. Nowadays, this has eroded, and for this reason this bulwark against negative behavior is disappearing. (an opinion)

Christians on the other hand have individual responsibility and are taught that if they are 'evil' God will punish them. For this reason, believing in the Bible, its moral teachings, and judgment of God tends to be a bulwark against negative behavior even when away from their peers.

Good and evil are relative terms...not all would agree and that is why we need lawyers. Sincerely though, good and evil become evident and separated in the light of truth. The difference between good and evil...good is life giving and evil is life taking. Good builds while evil destroys.

The good and evil that you see don't even exist in reality, at least not outside of the mind that believes in them. They are only judgments passed by the individual from their own unique perspective. What one person sees as bad or evil may seem to be the only logical thing to do from some other perspective. The ideas of both good and evil are point of view specific. This is why people like bush and bin laden are either loved or hated. Bush is seen as good by people who share his fear based thought system. Those who have a compassionate concern for all of mankind often see him as evil.

Bin laden is much the same. He is a villain in much of the western world, but he is somewhat of a celebrated pop star on the Middle East. There are T-shirt shops that sell items with his picture as though he was Jesus. It all depends on your point of view or perspective.

To sum it all up good is the name we give to people who do things that we think we like.

Evil is the name we give to people who do the things that we don’t like.

This is of course based solely on our particular point of view.

The bottomline is that good generates self-esteem whereas evil only self-hate or self-pity. Good and evil are better differentiated by what they do to the subject rather than to the object!!

Creator Based: Good is anything that is according to the nature of the creator and evil is that which is opposed to the nature of the creator.

Humanist Based: No difference. There is no barometer. Everything is relative and there are no absolutes. Whats evil to me may be good to you. Good and evil becomes what the populous agree on and can change at any time.

A good act may remain submerged, but it will ultimately yield good result.
An evil design, however camouflaged, will yield bad result.
These two can be differentiated in the different(contrasting) results they produce.

What fulfils your sensual apatite and you tend to indulge in that too much, is an evil. On the contrary What fulfils your spiritual apatite and is beneficial to all creatures can be termed as good.

Good = life affirming, evil = life denying.

But I don't mean it as absolute as that sounds. I don't mean it's always good to increase life (i.e., rampant, unchecked procreation). But, in general, the move/hphilosophy which affirms life is the better choice.

examples include: good = anti-war, anti torture, pro-freedom (self determination, independence, freedom of religion/sexuality/choice) anti-torture,; evil = war (most); corporation who try to suck the life from employees and the consumed; capitalism; anti-environmentalism, misogeny; racism....

there's so much more, too much to put into words, too much unspeakable....to much contingency
