Apache,
That's the way it is in corporate structure.
You make the GM look good, you get to keep your job, get raises. The GM needs to look good to his boss so that he could keep his job...
If it makes ya feel any better, the CEO KNOWS who does the real work...but he probably came up the same way.

Three easy solutions: Deal with it, go crying to your GM that you feel under-appreciated, or find another job.
I've dealt with a lot of C-level executives over the years. Despite their reputations for being overpaid, the vast majority are very intelligent, personalities notwtihstanding. The CEO knows that the GM can't do everything by himself. If he could, he wouldn't need a staff.

CEO's know that he does not do the operations that make your corporation produce whatever it is you produce. Your GM is doing nothing more than talking about his inability to lead. By not showing the ability to mentor or share credit he has removed his opportunity for advancement. If you people operate without your constant supervision that is what merits promotion. There is no solution, since anything you could do to him or his reputation discredits you and your co-workers.

Speak up but be prepared if your CEO does not bother with you, be prepared to resign or suffer hell.
Unless your services in the company is valued deeply e.g a headhunted professional, if not be prepared for more politics. But likewise, if you are so valued in the first place, no worries about your rice bowl even it means to move on.That's life. Cheers:)

That's how the working world works sorry buddy, he's your boss so he takes credit when you have done well and gets the blame when you do something wrong.
Don't worry about it, just keep working hard and your time to shine will come.
