yes definately, this is how its done properly. first get a bathroom silicone thats mould resitant. then after clean the work surface and the tiles cut the nozzle off the tube so it is slightly bigger than the gap between worksurface. then slowly (like your decorating a cake) hold the gun at 45 degrees and go one end to the other making sure its as neat as you can make it ensuring the silicone touches the tile and worktop all the time. next get a small spray bottle and put a drop of washing up liquid in it and water, shake it so you got a soapy solution. spray it over the whole length of the silicone then get a small peice of wood like a lolly stick or the handle of a teaspoon and run it along the soaped up silicone to give a perfect finish

Transparent looks best, a very thin bead is all that is needed, and use proper silicone, not the cheap "kitchen and bathroom seal" sold by the DIY sheds, as this will shrink and crack after a while. Dow Corning or Bond It both make a full range of silicone sealers.

When ever you have tile meeting any other surface or at a corner
you should have a silicone bead between the two. Don't grout the joint leave it opened for the silicone. I would use the white silicone myself just my preference.

definatley use white and try and get a brand called "arbo" it is for outdoor use on windows ect and has components to stop water/rain/damp breaking it down. im a window fitter and use it all the time, but its excellent for kithen/bathroom.

yes otherwise water and other debris will gather behind your worksurface. if your surface is laminate and not marble water will cause the chipboard to swell.
