If I was on the jury you wouldnt have to worry about a thing. I would make the crook pay for your carpet cleaning bill.

Shoot the son of a *****. If he came into my house I'd put a round in his damn temple. I doubt you'll hit him though. You just bought the gun so you're probably a bad shot. Not cutting you down just stating the facts. I'd go to the range and practice some with it.
Better yet, sell the pistol. There is a good reason for this.
If you shoot a pistol in your house you stand a good chance of missing. Believe it or not that round WILL go through the wall. If you have family on the other side of that wall you could hit them. Or it could go through the wall and outside the house. You might not hit anything but you never know.
Instead of the handgun buy a 12 gauge shotgun and use #00 buck shot or bird shot. Ask the gun dealer more about the right type of ammo to use for home defense.
If you buy a shotgun get a good one. You can't go wrong with a Remington 870 or a Mossberg 500. Also buy the shortest barrel you can. The standard leangth is 20 inches. Try to find one around 16 to 18 inches. You can also buy a shotgun with a barrel 14 inches long with a pistol grip. These type of guns are classified as AOW ,or any other weapon, by the ATF. Mossberg makes one in their 590 series. There is a special $5 tax that is applied to it. You can pick up any of these shotguns for around $250 to $400 and are much better for home defense.

By law you can only use force necessary to protect your property.
Shooting someone for attempting to break in is considered excessive force, and is punishable as a manslaughter charge.
However, if you wait until their in the house, and if they have any weapon or if you feel your life is threatened, you can legally shoot
them. If by chance you should happen to kill them, it is highly advised that you place a weapon in their hand.
Just make sure the weapon you place is free of your fingerprints or other material that can be linked to you.
Another thing to consider is the gun you have. You said, " into my house the past couple of nights" then you said "So I bought a 9mm" This can not be a legal fire arm because national law says there is a 10 day waiting period for a hand gun permit. If your weapon is not legally registered and you shoot someone with it, your screwed. Then you go to jail for manslaughter and the gun charge which could add up to 20 years in the pen.
There is a lot to learn concerning this subject, keep researching the laws, it could save you some real problems. Each State has differnt laws reguarding the requirements and use of a firearm, so I can't advise you much futher. Good luck.
PS. I was wrong about the 10 day waiting period, thats only in some states.

My advice? Don't use any guns, don't use any tasers. Don't resort to violence. You might feel threatened but that's normal. Anyone in your situation would yet it's better to take subtle measures.
Instead, go out with your friends, enjoy yourself and relax. At the same time, simply put up a hidden camera(at least 2 to 3 so that you can capture the culprit's face from a few different angles) somewhere and have his actions recorded. Just stay at a friend's house so that nothing happens to you and instead, wait for a few days and watch the footage. I know, it's your house but still, don't jump the gun and do something you'd regret for life.
After all, it could be a child or harmless teenager who decided to play a prank on someone. Yeah, breaking into a house ain't the smartest thing to do but, well, most teens have no sense of reality anyways.
And oh, many say they won't regret shooting someone but when it comes to the consequences, many do and end up needing some major counselling or end up abusing drugs and living on the streets. And the amount of cash you'd be spending on repairing the damage to yourself, would be enough to buy a new bike or even a nice car.
My advice? Save yourself the trauma and don't screw yourself for life.

After some freak tried breaking in my house, I knew they were still lurking about the neighborhood.(They werent successful in taking anything and the rest is a long story). I decided I would make the robbers think I was a homicidal maniac. I would sit on my front porch with a butcher knife in my hand and talk to myself. I made sure all the kids were in school, and I let my neighbors know what I was doing. There have been no more breakins near my house. They moved to the next subdivision. :)

Where I live, there is no requirement for the resident to retreat in his own home. If a bad guy breaks in, shooting is legal. Bang! Bang! The taxpayers save a lot of money.
Of course you're going to tell the police, when they finally arrive, the intruder had threatened to kill you and was advancing toward you.

I think every person over the age of 21, should own a gun. If nothing else just for protection. If that person trys to break in, shoot them. As soon as I heard them coming in, I would say I have a gun, you better leave or I will shoot you, if they don't leave & enter your home, then yes, shoot them. Do not hessitate, or they may shoot you. Do not EVER pull a gun unless you plan on using it.

Try to conceal a video camera in the ceiling...someplace that they wont find it, for obvious reasons. The police can do more with hard evidence. Keep the pistol locked away...if they find that and use it in a crime....well, im sure you understand what the consequences could be.

Have you lodged written complaints with the police with acknowledgement from them?
You can shoot them below the hip for self protection. If they happen to overpower you ,you are in trouble.
Going by the 'law of the land 'is always better.
Try to register your complaints with the higher authorities, with additional complaint about the local police who are not ating on your complaints.

NEW LAWS ON THIS MATTER !!
Before it was legal to shoot someone that was IN , i say IN , your home, but now the "all life is important bastar** " have changed this..
YOU MUST FEEL YOUR LIFE IS IN DANGER WITH AN IMMEDIATE THREAT.
As in you are to retreat to an area of your house and let them go about their buisness, until or unless they come after you or have a gun or weapon upon them and are threatening you with it. Once this happens shoot the fu***** where he stands... Make sure they are in your house... Defend yourself, dont commit murder, and dont tell them Yahoo answers told me to do it. Use your judgement.
