No. They take up only a few more bytes than the number of characters in the link itself. (Well, they should. Internet Explorer saves the files adds quite a bit of stuff to them which doubles or triples the size).

Nope. Just 4,096 bytes on disk was the max. The file size itself was much smaller (439 bytes,) but the disk space allocated is more relevant.

I don't think so. When I make a shortcut on my desktop it usually ranges from 4 to 300 bytes depending on the size of the webpage.

No, it's saved as text, so it saves very little space.
