hello about a few weeks ago I went into the e.r. because my finger had been slammed in a car door. I was originally givein vicodin but the swelling had not gone down and It didnt really manage my pain that well. so I went back in and got the worst doctor in the world in my opinion and let the nurse tell me that vicodin should work fine and made it seem like I had a drug problem. he then wrote me a prescription for vistaril and said it works really well for pain and to take it with some form of anti-inflamitory. I did not fill the prescription and filed a greavence with the hospital. but I was wondering if anyone else had heard of it being prescribed for pain.

I'm a pharmacy tech and I've seen Vistaril prescribed for pain a lot. It is a weak analgesic The reason why it was prescribed with an anti-inflammatory medication is that Vistaril increases the pain relieving effect of the anti-inflammatory drug.

Go to this site for more info: http://www.drugs.com/MTM/V/Vistaril.html

Vistaril and Atarax are not exactly the same medication. Vistaril is Hydroxyzine Pamoate and Atarax is Hydroxyzine Hydrochloride. Although they are similar, they are not exactly the same.

Vistaril (brand name Atarax) is not a proper medication for pain. You might be better off with a specialized pain medication like Tramadol, Ultram or Fioricet. Be carefull mixing anti-inflamatories with other medications. I have listed two links below for info on Vistaril and a reputable US online pharmacy that offers pain medications and information on Atarax.

I have sleep problems and drugs like trazadone and seroquel did not have any effect on me - the doctor gave me visitril and said they give it to patients who have recently come out of surgery to help keep them knocked out. This drug also had no effect on me - but Norco keeps me wide awake as well (which I was also taking)....
