You will not find the United States of America listed as a democracy in any textbook. The USA is a republic, government in which the masses elect officials to represent, or vote, for them. Those officials represent your voice on the issues brought before Congress. If you have a problem with how these people are representing you, you have to tell them. If you don't know who you're representative and senators are, shame on you.

It can't turn away from something it never was. The Untied States was founded as a Constitutional Republic. Democracy was wholly rejected by our Founding Fathers. Democracy is mob rule instead of the rule of law. Thomas Jefferson once said: "A democracy is nothing more than mob rule, where fifty-one percent of the people may take away the rights of the other forty-nine."
What the United States IS doing is turning away from REPUBLICANISM (not the party, the ideology). The United States is actually becoming a Corporatocracy engaging in corporatism. This is where the real power lies with giant corporations instead of the people. Think about it: When was the last time our elected officials did what we asked them to do? Conversely, when was the last time our elected officials did what giant multi-national corporations told them to do?

We aren't a democracy, but a republic. We are slowly losing our liberties because morality is irrelevant in a "do what feels good" society. People won't say that they screwed up & try to remedy it, instead they blame their parents, work, society, etc. Then, the government isn't helping by encouraging irresponsible behavior & making laws to stop it when legislators realize they have a problem.
We won't regain the masses until they wake up & smell the coffee. Political correctness is killing us from within. Everyone needs to be offended from time to time. It tests their faith, character, & will. Sadly, I feel that it will take an attack or a disaster that cuts most of the country off from the federal government.for them to wake up,

Good question.
Regain the masses? You would need to control the media or buy them off out right.
I think maybe the masses don't really believe in democracy anymore. A profit driven society and a democracy don't mix. We reward the selfish individualist not someone who respects every ones opinion, who thinks "the people" are anyone but workforce and cannon fodder. That can imagine their way is not the only one.
Democracy is a good dream, but, people have to believe in each other and respect diversity first..and this is very hard for people raised in a society that rewards the takers.
We should maybe honor the givers and oppose the takers.

I don't know if it's "turning away" so much... that would imply that it's been more active than it is now... which I think that people get active in "tough times"...
in other words... when things go bad, people start voting... if things are ok, people don't care... apathy through contentment...
I'm not sure you want to gain "the masses"... they haven't been paying too much attention and if they start, they won't do their homework, they will vote on "who's the best speaker"... and "who looks the best"... heck that's what they vote on now... much less if more of the masses voted...

We were founded as a republic that was transfered to a democracy .The declaration of independence and the constitution both, dont have democracy in them once .In a republic you retain all rights ever granted and people have to vote to make changes .In a democracy ,you elect representaives to vote for you and when laws are changed you loose rights you had before ,and only have rights in accordance to the new laws .A democracy forms a monarchy which usually controls every one else .Or a rich - poor society .A democracy only works if you can hold your elected officials accountable for their actions .Which we do not .A democracy where you have no accountability invites corruption and victimizing of the people for govt, profit . Our elected officials and judges swear an oath to defend the constitution ,then pass laws in direct violation to it with out regard .Our justice system industrializes robbing and imprisoning nonviolent citizens to profit government To try and regain the masses people have to see our democratic and republican parties for what they are (robbing the people and destroying our nation ) We need to return to a government of a republic and restore the freedom and liberty of our constitution .We are over taxed and victimized by a corrupt govt..We went from the richest most powerful nation on earth to being 8 trillion dollars in debt ,China owns half our country .The American dollar is worth about 60 cents Euro .And still we are taxed to the point govt. gets more of our money than we do and they are constanly implementing more taxes . Politicans have out sourced our job market to other countries destroyed anything to benifit the working class , catered to corperate and special interest groups ,robbed social security from our elderly .Stole our freedom and liberty in the name of security .Turned our poilice from public servants to public predators usually on our poor who are already struggling to get by, for govt. profit Destroyed the patriotism in our people to win 2 world wars ,by robbing ,imprisoning and victimizing families .No foreign power could destroy our nation as fast as our own selfish citizens in govt are .The most dangerous enemy of the people is not foreign but from with in their own govt. Read the reasons our founding fathers fought for our freedom and how comparable to our present govt. I could go on and on .

Well we may be a democracy, but we were actually supposed to be a republic. I think that's why we have so many problems in our government now.
