Honestly, if you want a nice dependable economical car, go get an import. Somewhere along the lines of a Honda, Toyota, Mitsubishi, and even Hyundai and Kia. Never buy an American motor company car unless you got a huge bank that will allow you to keep taking it to the mechanic. Dont even go with european cars, they are just as bad, which is why most wealthy people drive the cause they can afford the mechanical work. But yeah try to stay away from american cars. Sorry, i dont mean to down the US economy, but seriously if they want to stop people from purchasing autos from outside the US, then they should honestly think about making their cars more economical and trustworthy on the road. I got a 25 year old Honda Accord, ive only taken it to the mechanic once in its entire life span and that was because of something i did wrong (street racing with stock parts in 3rd gear :) lol)

Well yes and no, I have owned a pontiac that crapped out and stopped running, but i currently own a pontiac vibe which all the technology behind it was toyota. In fact the only differences are the headlights, tail lights and the roof rack. other than that, the engine is toyota, the chassis is toyota. so on and so forth. Nice thing about toyotas is that they usually last a long time. Mine should last a good 10 years... not that i could stand the same car for 10 years but it could....

Of course, GM isnt known for making the most reliable cars. But don't feel bad, that eclipse isnt at the top of the reliability chart either. Infact I think they were the least reliable car to own one year.
I had a 2004 grand am, same car as yours but no body clad paneling, and a 4 cylinder. Sounds like you got it used? It's possible the previous owner abused it. You could contact pontiac and they might agree to pay for some of the repair since it's so short out of warranty.

i have owned both, Mitsubishi's are nice looking but crap, i've replaced every single sensor since i've bought the thing i think i've spent about 3grand so far on electronics and wirring issues, pontiac was a bad choice too, they cant handle to much stress on there motors , or transmissions....call a junk yard. im sure you can get a transmission for an okay price for your car...good luck

Mitsubishi makes bad motors and suspension.
Perhaps get your local mechanic to get a used unit from the scrap yard (300-600). Then sell the car...

Get a bicycle like most Red Chinese used to do. They don't have automatic transmissions, and ALGORE will be proud of you.
