a simple still, you put water in a container that you can boil it in, and catch the steam by having a lid on it and a coiled tube comming out of the top of the lid as the coils cool the steam in them condenses and turns into pure water, and that tube should drop the water into a clean container with a lid that the tube goes into through a small hole. after a few fillings of the salt water you will have to clean the salt out of the salt water container. this could be done on a small scale or a very large scale. but the process is simple.

The simplest method is distillation, but that takes a lot of energy and is too expensive for most applications, except in countries like Saudi Arabia and Kuwait which have a surplus of natural gas they have no market for.

The most commercially viable method is reverse osmosis, but that requires special membranes and would be difficult to construct a working model. This article has pictures of some of the wellheads and membrane tubes that might help.
