I live in Minnesota. Last fall, for about a week, when I went to bed I would hear this scratching noise in the attic or sort of sounds like its in the wall close to the ceiling. Once, I briefly heard this high pitch squealing sort of noise. Then it quit. A couple weeks ago, after I went to bed I heard a tiny bit of scratching again. I haven't since then. Does this sound like bats? Do they hibernate but still occasionally make noise? I live in a rambler so my attic isn't the type you just go into. I don't think I have mice. I've never seen any mouse droppings anywhere in my house. Also, my dad is very allergic to mice, and he has never had a reaction when coming to my house.

Possibly they still do make some noise especially that spring isn't to far off now. You'd have to go check to make sure, they shouldn't be to hard to spot if you can figure out how to access your attic. But usually when people believe they have bats it turns out to be something else... shrews, mice, rats, sometimes they won't actually go into the house so you wouldn't see any signs. If they are bats, don't call the exterminator. Instead, when conditions are better outside (when the bugs are arround for the bats to feed and its a little warmer !) you can try to figure out how they are getting in and set up a one way door so the bats exit and don't come back in, once you're sure that there aren't any bats left simply plug the hole, bats won't enlarge or gnaw at the wood like a rodent they simply use holes that are already present. If you don't feel comfortable doing this try and locate a humane wildlife removal service, ask lots of questions including about the safety of the bat, if they do the one way door, make sure all bats are gone and refuse to do it during breeding season you know you've found a good removal service (there are many so called humane removal that aren't they just use the name to get more clients), often the good ones will come to evaluate see what you have with no extra-charge. As well after that's done maybe put a bat house/condo to keep them in the area so they can eat continue eating insects around.

Some animal, a pretty sensible one I'd guess. Cold in Minnesota this time of year. Could be bats, rats, squirrels. Probably not moose.
