This is a hard question. I guess I would be polite, tell them all is fine, answer no personal questions, and move on. If they really cared, they would stay in touch with you, but they haven't. They might have treated you as family while you were dating their family member, but why give them a chance to make you feel bad. You have many thoughts and memories, both good and bad. Be polite, keep it short, and move on. It is history, and focus on what is best for you. Chances are, they are as uncomfortable as you are, so be cordial, wish them well, and get the hell out of there for yourself!!! Be the nice person you are, at all times.

I know such an awkward situation, I agree with the first answer. Let's face it by being polite and keep the chatting as brief as possible since it's no use talking in a lengthy manner. Enough is enough, such an old flame needs staying far away eternally and, literally speaking, also needs putting off for the sake of both parties. Each should find solace and be happy in one's own way like a brave hero keeps going without bothering such a flame anymore. Take care.

I can say that I could probably speak to my old flames with very little discomfort, but I'm not certain about the family members. The family members never really knew who I was anyway, so they are only going to remember that necessary facade we use to slide into each other's families with as little resistance as possible.
I don't think there's a right or wrong answer. It doesn't hurt to initiate a pleasant greeting and some small talk, but that is up to you. You may want to avoid them altogether, if possible. Do what you think is best for you and them.
