1) I, V, X, L (one, five, ten, fifty...)
since XL = 40, VL=45, IL=49. . .
Unless you're using old fashioned roman numerals where nine is VIIII instead of IX.
2) Tradition; important things are set off with roman numerals or spelled out. In a movie, space can be an issue, and people don't want to read out a date when it's spelled out.
3) A Centurion leads C men (one hundred)
D is five hundred; I don't know the reason
M is one thousand. I assume these numbers relate to the Roman army because troops marched in formations of these numbers.

1.3 symbols: X,L, and I (XLIX).
2. I think for the same reason that roman numerals are on copyrighted books:
It is to tell the edition of the movies. If there are multiple editions, there are codes for telling which is the original, which is the second, and so on. there will be a letter in front of the Roman Numeralized date. That tells you the edition.
3.C -->CENTURIO = centurion
M -->MIL = MILES = soldier
D -->DOMINUS = master

look into a clock dial for extra information. I = one V = 5 X = ten L = fifty C= one hundred D= M= 1000 (you spot this in action picture copyrights and construction dates) upload the numbers from left to good. yet while a smaller selection is to the left of a better SUBTRACT. III = a million + a million + =3 IV potential subtract a million for 5 on account that I < V. MM= 1000 + 1000 IX = 9 seventy 4 = LIV = fifty +(5 - one) 364 = CCCLXIV one hundred+one hundred+one hundred+50+10+(5-a million) MMMCCXXIV

1. They used capital I for 1, V for 5, X for 10, L for 50. I know that you said up to 49 but that is written as IL meaning 1 less than 50.
2. I think this may be so that the general public don't realise very quickly when it as made i.e. how old it is. It may also just be pretentiousness.

Actually, 49 is XLIX, because in this system you substract a numeral that begins with 1 (such as I,X,C,M) from its successor that begins with 1 or 5(V, L, D) by writing it left of the next digit.
IV,IX, XL,XC, CD,CM.
