I'm happy with my acer aspire. It was cheap and met my requirement of having an AMD. The intel vs. AMD goes back and forth. Currently Intel appears to have the lead. I would still take AMD. The price/performance ratio of AMD has pretty much always been better.
A few years ago I would've stayed away from acers because I saw close to a 50% hardware failure rate in their desktops. I can't count how many m/b's and components I've replaced in them. Their QA has gotten better and for the price I got mine there was no beating it.
I've also seen quite a few Dell's with bad hardware out of the box, though not nearly as many issues as with older acers.
I generally don't like Compaq's. Mostly because of having dealt with the proprietary hardware issues in fixing servers and desktops.

both acer and hp-compaq are great notebooks to use for daily life. but acer gets an edge on tough build quality while compaq parts are a bit delicate. but otherwise if you are a good handler of notebooks, you may go for compaq as it is more on the attractive side and yes, better dont go for celeron on either of the books if you download softwares. it runs quite slow. go for centrino instead even if it costs more.
coming to comparing the two processors, intel core 2 duo is a better option considering the market reputation and reliability. amd is good for people who like gaming as it had advanced graphics but it runs slightly hot at times. go for intel core 2 duo if you want and all round performance.

If you don't mind, I would really recommend the Dell Inspiron 9400. It's a great deal ($999) and it comes loaded with features including the option to upgrade the graphics card to a geforce 7900GS which is great for a laptop. I definitely wouldn't get the Acer... Dell makes nice laptops.

Compaq. As for Intel vs AMD, take out intel celeron and AMD Sempron then flip a coin.
