Regarding the sentence: I think they are hopeful, but as an extra dose of hope, they'll cross their fingers. Crossing fingers is sort of superstitious.

Hope is found within man and not religious so it is not the same as crossing the fingers is making the sign of the cross thus making a silent prayer for God's help or intervention

Originally forming the fingers in a cross like shape was to ward off evil. It was the blessing of priests and the cross was the accepted means to dispel such things as ghosts and demons.
Today it is a means of wishing someone good luck.

Hmm. Interesting. In this sentence:
hopeful: I'm unsure of what will happen, but in any case I am confident that things will work out my way
fingers crossed: since I'm still a bit unsure, I will keep my fingers crossed, despite my confidence
If that makes any sense whatsoever. Hah.

RE:
What is the meaning of "cross your fingers" ?
Is it "hopeful"or "anxious" ? Many said it is hopeful but check this sentence- I am hopeful for you but still we will keep our fingers crossed. Does it looks like a repetition if the meaning is same?
