Is there a reason you need to tell her? If there isn't, then don't..... But just say "Mom, I dont' want you gettin all touchy feelie on me, but I got my period and it's not a big deal, so don't make it one."

Firstly , why do you feel that you have to tell your mom ? This is a personal issue and if you are coping with it and everything is ok then it's fine to keep it private.
What concerns me is that you seem to be angry with her. Maybe something she's done has hurt you somehow.I think that she probably feels the tension between you and wanting to hug you is her way of trying to reach out to you and make things right again. I know it's hard to understand why parents do things the way they do . I can tell you from my own experience both as a daughter and a mother that parents are not always right .They make mistakes .... sometimes pretty big ones .
I know this is kind of heavy for the question you've asked but i share this with you because i know how hurtful it is to carry such anger. No daughter naturally wants to be without her mother in her life .... we all need that relationship.
If what I've said here applies to you in anyway , please try and talk to her about what's really bothering you. These things can easily escalate and become a long term heartache.I bet your mom wants nothing more than to bridge the distance between you and make it right again. It's up to you but it is sooooo worth it to try !! ....... wishin you all the best , take care : )

accept your womanhood and really be one by telling your mother. maybe you can tell her beforehand that you dont want her to be all momish about it so that she is aware of how you feel before you give her the news of your period.
