I would say when you have done, and preferably published, original research, then you are a scientist. But some people are looser with the term, calling anyone who investigates some property of the natural world a scientist (which would include 6th graders doing science projects, which is probably not what you had in mind).

I think when you are employed as a scientist, you can call yourself that. I have a degree, but was employed as a laboratory technician for 3 years, after which I got a job as a medical scientist.

I have taught science for 30 years. As a 9 year old child I made my own chemistry set with colored water. My mom then got me a Gilbert Chemistry set. As a kid I had (and used) a microscope and various electronics kits.
I approach many aspects of life using the scientific method. (I don't use it to understand women.)
I think I am a scientist even if I haven't published anything.

Would that be an amatuer or a professional scientist? In some sense, we are all amatuer scientists. But to be called a professional scientist, you gotta get paid for it. Until then, you're just another student doing research.

Anytime. I usually do it when people are asking questions I don't know the answer to or my authority is being questioned. Like Bill Murray in Ghostbusters... "back off man, I'm a scientist."

In infancy. All infants are scientists, they go about finding things out. I've seen them at it.
