If they let them in then they can create a problem that they have to solve by making more laws. Just like 9/11 enabled them to get away with homeland security and the Patriots act. Once they can say officially we do have a problem then they can make everybody take the National ID card they are working on implementing. Then when they see that people are stealing the ID cards they can force us to take the chip.

The border issue is presently a "hot potato." Pick it up and you get burned. The answers given before mine also include many good points.
Whoever is in charge has to press for a solution. Candidates can't really solve anything by stirring up and muddying the waters in advance of the election.

I think there are three main reasons.
1) They want the votes of legal immigrants, who might be offended if the illegal ones can't enter the country.
2) The popular solution of putting up a fence won't work. And they know it. A 20 foot high fence, means a 21 foot ladder.
3) The best solution is to heavily fine employers for hiring illegal immigrants. But then businesses will withdraw financial support from the candidates.

That issue is just too hot right now. One wrong word about the border could cost them the election.
