Being a Christian singer/songwriter, it appears that Derek is referring to the crucifixion.
Death on a cross was truly torture, but it meant the restoration of man to God, so it was a time of rejoicing.
The biggest clue is the phrase "it's finished." "It is finished," meaning the restoration of man and the ultimate sacrifice for our sin, were the last words of Christ.

It seems like the person who wrote this song was writing about someone who broke his/her heart and found the other person to be horrible.
