There are different grades of water for different purposes. Raw water must be treated to remove hardness, suspended particles, bacteria and other marine growth which may affect performance, demineralised if needed, and supplemented with some chemicals to prevent corrosion of pipes and vessels. Some processes limit the mineral content as measured by electrical conductivity, some limit bacteria, some limit the chlorine and other halides etc.

Some water needs specific additives, for example, cooling water.

Usually deionized water, which is just a big term for filtered water. Some processes need distilled water.
