Consider the example 2^(4) say:-

To get the superscript you select the numbers in the exponent, go into "format" then "font..." and check the box for superscript.
Of course, microsoft word wasn't designed for typing up math; you can probably find something better.

You can do it in two ways:
1. Use the "^" symbol which means raised to the power of.
2. Use the "superscript" option available in the Font display box which can be accessed through the Format menu.

use the ^ button to indicate exponents example
e^(x-1) or x^2 (x squared)
