You can have a republic without democracy. China for example.A republic is a form of government independent of other countries. America is a republic. A democratic republic is where the citizens have some say in how the government runs. If America was not a republic and was only a democracy then the majority would rule. No need for laws to protect you if 51% think so then so be it.

A republic can still be a democracy. A democracy just means that the citizens have the power to choose what laws, politicians, etc. they want.
Republic is a term used for a representative democracy, which is what we have. A representative democracy is when the citizens of regions choose people to represent their regions (i.e. our Congress people and Senators)

A republic is a form of democracy, so that is how it is democracy.

This part means that we are pledging loyalty to a representative democracy.

The concept of a republic comes from the Romans. The Roman republic incorporated the Roman senate to speak for the people of Rome. A republic is where the people are represented in their government by elected officials. In a democracy, the people vote to choose those representatives.

BTW: I'm a Democrat."...and to the Republic" has nothing to do with Democrat or Republican ideals. It has to do with American ideals.

The nation is the United States and the republic, you are pledging allegiance. If you got a problem with that, get out of the country, we don't want you here.
