There is no set rule on how many inches of piranha per gallon, because the inch per gallon rule in general is a stupid rule. Red belly piranhas grow to 12 inches, so there is absolutely no way you could keep any in a 25 gallon tank. Since they are shoaling fish they need to be kept in groups of no less than 6, so the absolute bare minimum for red belly pirahnas is 125 gallons.

To keep Piranhas you should start with a 50 gallon. Unless you just want one. 50 gallons may not be able to hold multiple adult fish. It depends on their personalities.

If you put more than one in a 25gallon then in a year you will only have one left. It may take less time than that if you get a particularly dominate fish.

25 gallons is not big enough to hold any territorial fish. You maybe able to get away with one large fish or some dwarf cichlids.

Aggressive fish are not normally kept with live plants. They tend to dig them up. Try large river rocks enstead.

Get an external filter. Bio-wheels keep a healthy biological filter going all the time. I would get a filter for a 50 gallon if you plan on getting a Piranha.

Good Luck!

Some of the answers bare some truth but the skinny is that yes piranhas do best in groups. You can easy start your group of 3 or more 2-3" size in a 25 Gallon tank. Just make sure the piranhas are not 12" long when you buy them. Eventually if you want to grow them to their natural size (who would, since I can't imagine why you would want a 12" piranhas). Anyway you might being doing them an injustice by stunting their growth but they don't mind not one single bit. I have seen 4-6" inch piranhas well over the 5 year range content and happy ohhhh and eating alot. You will want to upgrade your tank eventually.

overlook the hot fish you opt for to placed that income the route of a a lot higher aquarium. Then get some extra piranhas they do much better to a higher college. including different fish although is demanding it ought to artwork for some days then you definately would discover some lacking fins and each and each once in awhile a lacking fish. Piranhas may even devour different college friends. i have had friends homestead jack Dempsey oscars and stuff of that nature effectively yet contained in the top this is going to easily be counted upon you piranhas. solid success dude

Um... I'm not an expert with piranhas... but I do know SOME stuff. The rule of thumb for tropical fish is one inch per fish, but less fish to be on the safe side... and for a tank that small id recommend just one... although it would be somewhat uncomfortable... maybe a fifty gallon filter, since piranhas are carnivores they produce higher levels of waste... and maybe amazon swords and other plants from the amazon river. since thats their natural habitat, and any light that supports photosynthesis would be fine...
