I want a cd writer which can read (not write) DVD's as well.
Which brand should I opt for?

They are all basically the same. And they all cost about $20-40 so if they stop working, I just get a new one. It's not worth wasting your time over $10-20.
To those saying Sony, I say, not sony. I have a sony writer and it is the slowest of the 3 burners I have with identical specs.
On the other hand, I've got some other Sony equipment that's great. So which is best? WHO CARES... it's $20. Maybe $40. If you don't like it, buy another brand and give that to a friend. Or relative. Or use two (I've got 3 burners in my box at home).

Go for Samsung. There are problems with both LG and Sony. Sony doesnt play a lot of pirated Discs. So Samsung is the best choice.

a good brand is octoedge(tm) samsung dvd multi player compact disc,it may cost nearly 1400
,LG dvd compact disc,www.samsung.com,intel etc

What you are looking for is also known as a combo drive... I am using this and have no issues till now...
