I had my last normal period on Jan. 12th....On Feb. 9th I started to have some spotting, and it lasted for about 4 days and also had some cramping, more on my right side, and never had any bleeding since. I don't have any pregnancy symtoms just my nipples are a bit sore, but not as bad as they are usually before my period. I have been taken may BBT every morning for the past 5 months, and what I have notince before that my temperature ranges between 96.4 to 97.0 ... It was very rare that my temperature would reach 97.2 and the following day would drop to my normal temp. After I have experieced the spotting a few day later I notice that my temperature went up and now ranges between 97.4 to 97.7 and has been like this for allmost two weeks. In my five months of charting I have not seen my bbt so high no matter what time I would take it in the morning and I dont have a fewer. Anyone know what this could be? Thanx for any advice!

It sounds like you have experienced anovulatory bleeding in the past (when you were spotting) b/c you never had a thermal shift. Once you have a thermal shift (at least 3 consecutive temps above the previous 6) you can be fairly sure you have ovulated. If you are tracking your cervical fluid, you can cross check your signs and be doubly sure.

Once you have ovulated, your luteal phase (the time between ovulation and the next period) will usually last from 12-16 days (though some women experience borderline or short luteal phases which can cause difficulty carrying a pregnancy). Your LP will be nearly the same from cycle to cycle.

Once your LP has gone at least 3 days beyond your longest LP in the last 12-24 months, you can be fairly sure you are pregnant. OR, if your high temps last for 18 days after ovulation (usually the last day before the thermal shift or sometimes the first day of the shift), you can also be pretty certain you are pregnant. The only other cause of an extended LP that I know of is a corpus luteum cyst, which is pretty rare.

If your temp has been elevated for 2 weeks and you've not taken clomid or used progesterone supplements, you can begin to suspect pregnacy. You can test now, or wait until you have 18 high temps to be sure.

Some good sources for charting your fertility signs: Fertilityfriend.com (free software as well as a pay-for version and on-line charting turorial); ovusoft.com (discussion boards for many fertility related issues, much info on fertility after the pill, and a very good software for purchase). The books Taking Charge of Your Fertility (associated w/ the the ovusoft website and software), The Art of Natural Family Planning, and Garden of Fertility
