The Beatles were more popular at first, but their musical career lasted about a decade. The Stones are still together all these years.

The Rolling Stones held on to their rock roots, unlike the Beatles who caved in to a pop sound (just listen to the Decca sessions and you will know what I mean)

The Beatles songs were tight, much owed to George Martin, who was a classical producer, and Brian Epstein their manager who gave the Fab Four a sense of structure, even if only putting them in matching suits.

For these reasons the Beatles were more popular. But had they taken more chances early on, and said no to extensive touring, they might still be together.

It was touring that broke up the Beatles. Touring took its toll, as well as pop-culture's expectations of the band. They let fame get the best of them, George Harrison was marginalized, John withdrew from the band when he met Yoko, Paul took the reins for a while, always the pragmatic one.

The Stones were not as popular, yet that probably was what saved them.

Well the only reason that the Rolling Stones have made more money than the Beatles is because, well lets see they had like 3 decades longer to make it. The Beatles made it possible for bands like the Stones to come to America. There is a reason everyone called the Beatles the British Invasion. Oh and by the way I am only 27 years old and I didn't have to look in Tiger Beat to know that. I just really love music.
