I think awkward silence is when people know they should or could say something but don't know what to say...like when you're in an elevator with people and no one talks, just stares at the numbers. Or awkward silence is when someone asks you if you like their new shirt and you don't reply...lol.

I like awkward silences 'cause they give me time to breathe and think. It's only a bit awkward when the person rarely talks and you have to initiate the conversation every time.
