Rental: Oversized water heater, and finally set it down to minimum. What did that cost me monthly? What if I put in a manual switch to turn on an hour before showers?

putting it on a timer will save you money. what is oversized in gallons? A "normal" temp setting should be about 120 degrees. Get a meat thermometer and stick it in the flow of hot water from a faucet this will tell you what the temp actually is.

You can have an electrician put a switch on a unit like this to turn on at a determined time and to keep the water hot at certain times.

I've thought about this myself. The water is being kept hot for what, my wife and I are not home from four A.M. until seven in the evening, the water is being kept hot for who? so, put a switch on the tank to turn on at a determined time, save that money.
