It depends. What do you know about? What do you think people reading it might be interested in? How can you make your subject interesting? There is no such thing as the "best" topic. Surely if you're a writer, you should be able to write about more than just 1 topic. If you set it up like that, your subsequent pieces will be inferior.

Which magazine? What do you mean by "literary"?
If you want a high end consumer magazine, do highly personal confessionals about encounters with high end consumer items. Try writing a letter to the editor telling of your interest in something you feel passionately intrigued by and ask them if they would be interested in reading the piece once it is written.
World affairs and economics make for good interviews. Talk to somebody about the Middle East, record it, and then make it a feature. Contact somebody via the embassies for someone in your town or city you can interview.
Good luck.

Depends on the magazine-
Political issues-(gay rights, abortion, health care, presidency)
Celebrity News-(rehab, break-ups, marriages, babies)
Sporting issues-(steriods, trades, rate of pay for players)
Health & Beauty-( weight loss remedies, surgeries, products)
Parenting-(depression, childcare, learning techniques)
That's just to name a few.
