Yes, it happens, usually, they have an exhibition game at the beginning of spring. Similarly, the Braves played Georgia Tech, one of the best NCAA teams last year.
But, it's mostly a practice game, the major league teams tend to send mostly minor league players, with a few major leaguers for the kids to try their stuff on.

They do that in Spring Training all the time. It is just an exhibition game. It's also a great experience for those college kids, may of whom will never get near the Major Leauges themselves. But they can always say they played against the Boston Red Sox. I think that's great.

Most teams play a college from their geographical area in spring training early.
One reason is to give the pro players a chance to warm up against good, but not pro teams, so hitters can face live pitching in a game situation and pitchers vice versa. It also gives the kids a chance to play against the pro's. Which is a thrill for the kids, most of whom will never advance even to the minor leagues.
It is a great idea for both sides and both sides benefit from it.

Yes,they did play Boston College on Friday. Most teams do play colleges during spring training, mainly during the early part of it. Boston just happened to pitch Matsuzaka against a bunch of college kids so he'd look great, and everyone could say he looked dazzling, dominating, etc. T

It's very possible that they did. The Atlanta Braves played a college team (The name of the team escapes my mind at the moment.) I think it's a good way for the college kids to get some good experience. I mean, what better way to learn then by playing pros right?
