Just a couple come to mind. First, you get to see it right off instead of having to wait as long. Second, you have the theatre atmosphere---it's a social event, outside of the house (being in the house long enough can drive me crazy!), on a huge screen, with great surround sound which is often hard to match at home, and often has enough people to make it fun. Plus, you can buy all sorts of stuff without having to make it yourself. The popcorn is a bit different, or if you want treats, etc. you can get those. Plus, the movie is more special in the theatre. I remember theatre moves better because for one the special effects are much better on the big screen and with the sound and so leave a more lasting effect. Watching a movie at home isn't much different than watching TV. After a while, it's almost the same thing. So theatre is much better.
There are only a couple negative things I can think of, and every single one has to do with money. But all considered, I think it's rather worth it.

Sometimes the pirated versions of movies come out before the theater versions do, so being able to see a movie first does not really apply.
