the owners have the final say on who works for them just like in any business... that's why the Clippers were always horrible because their owners were cheap... look at Cuban... who were the Dallas Mavericks before he bought them and starting spending money on bringing in talent and good coaching?... and Vinnie, Isiah Thomas does NOT own the Knicks... James Dolan does and he's an idiot and that's why the Knicks, with the highest revenue in the league... haven't won anything in 35 years... the owner doesn't do much as far as day to day operations, but if a guy is there, it's because he was hired by the owner, so the owner for that reason plays a HUGE part in the success of his franchise

They have some effect. The owner makes the key decisions on hiring the key people -- general manager, head of basketball operations, etc. There are some very good owners who make good choices for these positions, give them a good budget, and then get out of the way. There are other owners who actually have an appreciation of what makes a good team who play a more active role in a positive way. On the other hand, there are bad owners who refuse to give their basketball people the resources to be competitive or who lack the skills necessary to make the day-to-day decisions but still insist on meddling. There are examples of all four situations in all of the major sports including basketball. In short, the owner (both positively and negatively) sets the tone for the front office and the franchise and determines how strong an effort the team will make to be the best (as compared to merely competitive). Those decisions effect whether or not the team succeeds, but there are other factors that matter just as much if not more.

Most definitely. The team's owner makes all of the personnel decisions, like hiring a GM and coach. He establishes the teams home court and is involved in advertising and marketing. Here's two examples on the effect an owner has on a team: Mark Cuban and James Dolan. Cuban bought a Maverick's franchise that was stuck in mediocrity. He got a great arena, built a great staff, eventually hired Avery Johnson who brought the team to championship level. On the other hand, James Dolan hired Isaiah Thomas, and approved Larry Brown and paid him 40 gazillion dollars to piss off New York. He continued to give Thomas chance after chance, and dollar after dollar until what? a borderline lottery team that everyone is praising? Since when is barely missing the playoffs a cause for celebration? So the answer is yes.

If the owner is willing to spend money on quality players, building a good team chemistry, and rewarding those that have performed well. Case in point, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban. Good team, good owner. Bad example, is the football team in Dallas. bad owner, bad team and players. Do they honestly think Romo is gonna be a star? Terrel who?

Most of the time...No...Except for Mark Cuban & Isiah Thomas. Cuban because he's one of the nicest owners y'll ever play for. & Thomas because the Knicks want to win because they're in the largest U.S. city, playing for a basketball legend. & that kinda puts more pressure on the players to win than they already have. Plus they sucked last year & since N.Y.C. is so big, they have a larger fan base & more people want to see them win.
