Is your budget too tight to buy an engine? Sorry to be so harsh, but if you can't afford the maintenance, you really can't afford to replace the parts that fail due to lack of maintenance. In this particular case (unless you drive a Chrysler with a 2.7L), you may still be ok. Here is a little tip to assist on cleaning the engine. Drain out about 2 quarts of oil and refill with ATF (Trans fluid). Drive car about 2-300 miles, then get the oil changed. The ATF won't hurt your engine, yet has really good cleansing agents that battle sludge and the like.

Get it changed now!
The oil is probably sludge by now. If you stick to regular maintenance intervals you may be able to keep your engine life.
When you don't change oil, the engine loses lubrication and when metal rubs on metals, things break.
Oil changes can be pretty cheap, some dealerships, to be competitive offer $19.95 oil changes. With taxes and disposal (every place charges you that), it probably works out to $25-$27. It's worth the money, especially when your engine seizes and a new engine costs $4000.

You're not a dork- been there done that myself! Sometimes your financial situation and other circumstances hinder your ability to keep up with normal daily tasks and events! Sometimes you have no choice and no time to do things like oil changes because you have to get to work and not going to work could give you a bad rap with your employer if you do not show up! From experience, I have learned- do not always automatically blame yourself for your bad circumstances and things that happen- it's not always your fault! Try to find some time to get your car fixed and explain that you were busy helping the economy by working which helps other less fortunate people through taxes that you pay by showing up to work so you had no time to get your car fixed!

You're ok this time. The above answers were kinda right though. It's not good to put that many miles on an oil change.BUT you put a lot of highway miles on it which is not as bad as long as you had plenty of oil in it.I would try to change it every 3 thousand if I could.

yes, you are a dork, but dont worry. get it changed and move on. 10,000 miles can cause some damage, but it is when you go over about 15,000 to 20,000 that problems persist. should not be a big issue. just keep on it next time!!!

first of all your bearings are screaming for some good oil if they don't get it soon your walking. i would try a motor flush just ask for it at the parts store. just pour it in where you put your oil run the engine for 5 minutes and change the oil that should take care of most of the sludge build up in the engine.

you need to get it changed. you could burn up your engine if you are low on oil, or mess up your pistons and have to pay big$ to get it fixed.
