I adore this question. My "teacher" is actually my students. I teach teenagers with disabilities and after half a lifetime with them I have gained a degree (!) in human insight I would never be able to get from any professor in any college.
Thank you for asking the 'right' question we ALL should be answering before we perish.

Life is a teacher that is very correct. However it is not dependent upon when a person is ready. Life begins teaching right from the start. So a better phrase would be.....
"When the student is ready to listen, he will be late for class"

you could say that once we realise that the lesson has started, the learning begins. life experience and self tutoring is the true teacher. we can be taught by others, yet it is the internal analysis that creates the awareness. self reflection is the key to understanding. internal dialogs and discussion.
you can lead a horse to water but you cant make him drink... could be better said as:
you can lead a man to knowledge but you cant make him think!
and so others may give the tools, but we must come to our own understanding for it to be made a reality.
so we are the best teacher we will ever have, because without our own help, knowledge is isolated. with our own experience comes the un-packing of ideas, and takes us closer to a being able to use the knowledge.
remembering isnt enough, but actually using what we know is the key.

At first when I heard this a was expecting some wise old man with a beard and long white robes.
Boy was I in for a rude awakening. Often it is a person who seems to be able to push all of my discomfort buttons at the same time.
Usually it is someone that I see as an impediment to the way I wish that things were.
These people create a certain amount of fear that I need to recognize and learn to deal with.
The real difficulty is recognizing that these people and these situations as the blessings to me that they are.
Love and blessings Don

When I was ready to start learning how to write professionally, I didn't turn to classes or teachers at my high school. I did all my own research. So I guess I feel that the phrase means when you are ready to learn, you will teach yourself.
Just my thought. :)

Two particular teachers, or mentors, stand out in my life.
There was a respected college Literature professor who taught me much; not just about literature, but pride and honor.
My guitar teacher recognized the potential within me and pushed me to greater and greater heights of ability.

Anyone who is suitable at any one time to teach me the lesson i require.
I think the saying in your question refers to many people in each of our lives, to a lesser or greater degree. We all have many teachers and without knowing it we do the same service to others.

STAR question!!
Life is the greatest teacher!! All our great lessons come from important events in life... and indeed only when we are ready to learn a lesson.
