Is there a never ending supply? Some of the things I hear people give out as advice to those who ask sincere questions about writing are laughable. Some are utterly ridiculous. I especially love the ones that take a high moral tone and tell the questioner how diligently they strived for an interminable number of years to achieve the (so called) degree of style they now practice.How they suffered for their art. How you (smirking as they imply that maybe you won't) can do it too---if only you beleive.
Then again, there are some rock steady, straight to he heart of the matter, profound answers from time to time. that really impress me. I wish more of us would vote and promote when we see those jewels pop up. Maybe it would discourage the vapid ones away from this forum.
I doubt it. Let's face it . Plastic rules.

The worst answers that I find are those who tell you all about the spirit of writing and that anyone can write a book if they only believe in themselves, open a Word document and start typing away! At the end, when you slide down that rainbow, you'll have a novel! Not. There seems to be a bizarre belief that if you believe in yourself you can do anything you want and it won't require work. I can usually tell this is the answer the questioner is fishing for so I skip it because he/she isn't really serious about writing.
To write a novel requires a conscious or unconscious knowledge of the mechanics of creating a story in addition to talent.
Because storytelling is no longer taught in most schools anymore (it stopped in the 1960s and creative writing does not teach how to write a story), writers learn how to write a book by seeing how other writers create a story by reading and mimicking. Stephen King said this is how he learned.
The way to consciously learn how to write is by learning the mechanics of storytelling. Take a look at today's premier storytelling medium: film and television. The people who write the scripts learn how to tell a story by learning about the craft of storytelling in film school and seminars where storytelling is explicitly taught. Most certainly, talent is required, but learning the craft maximizes talent.
