I'd say no, for this reason, students may have certain unforseen and unimaginable emergencies occur. And after school to call home for rides and stuff, this is especially important for me because my school doesn't have a bus (it is a private one, total number of students in school=43...) and both my parents work so on certain days it is iffy as to how we are getting home, so I usually need it for calling home. However I believe that if the phone is at school and has to be on, it shouldn't even be on vibrate, the ringers should be completely off. Because of cheating and being a general distraction it shouldn't, but to me, the positives outweigh the negatives therefore, I believe, no, they shouldn't be, but that is just me...

No. I know, I'm a teen as well, but I don't have a mobile phone to start with. I had a dilemma, get a $50 activation kit for my dad's old mobile or get a PSP with a 1GB Memory Stick (PSP= photos, music, video, WiFi internet, and games). So you may know what I chose- PSP. But I see many students in school without a ride, so they phone their parents or someone to pick them up from school. No, a phone is a handy emergency tool, it's just that they all have cameras, MP3 playback, and text message capabilities. I know, it's getting out of hand. Students texting all day, every day. I'm glad I got a PSP, a lot of music and a bit of video and photos. Also, like the first person answered, if they banned phones, they'd have to ban digital audio players as well, which means banning PSP's too. So what, but audio players and PSP's are great forms of entertainment and occupation. If only there was some way to ban phones only for the people who get distracted by them.

I think that they should be allowed in school, but turned off during classes. The only time the student needs to be contacted by phone during school hours is by a parent. That can be done through the school office, if needed. It's just a matter of if the students will abuse the rules. If they cannot abide by the rules, then they should be banned. I truly see no harm in having them on their person, though, in case of emergency.

Definately should be banned! They are too much of a distraction and a security risk. How can you learn when you're getting calls or text messages in class? What about when a kid gets upset with a teacher or classmate and calls someone to come and 'get' that person....too many risks involved...I'm a teacher and have personally experienced these! This is not just what I think...It's what I've been through!

I believe that they should be turned off while in class but I see no problem with using them during lunch break or recess.
