They used to have to use actual rabbits to test for pregnancy. The rabbit died so the test could be given - so the rabbit died either way (it was killed to extract the ovaries to produce the hormone used in the test). But for some reason, the rabbit died came out to mean in slang terms, that the woman was pregnant. It almost always has a negative connotation (as in, it was not expected)

It's an old wive's tale about injecting a rabbit with the blood from a supposed pregnant woman. If the rabbit died, then the woman was pregnant. If it lived, she wasn't.
It's nothing but a bunch of hooey.
