The following things you will have to do on your PC.
1. Search *.temp & delete them.
2. Search *.log & delete them.
3. Search temprory Internet files folder & delete the content of that folder.
4. Search Temp folder & delete the content.
5. Run disk clean up & clean.
6. Defrag your system.
7. Download winxp manager install & run 1 click cleaner, you can get this software from www.softarchive.net in registry cleaner section.
8. Run msconfig & except antivirous & anti spyware uncheck all the items. Also except microsoft services close any un called for services.
9. Last but not least upgrade your memory to atleast 512 MB.

If you can than the shortest way is to format your HDD & reinstall.

First you have the bare minimum to run many of the new programs. These new programs take much more memory and if they have much graphics, they are stealing from you processor and ram to run the graphics.

Number 1 is more memory.
If lots of graphics, number 2 is video card.
If it is a lot of computational engineering or excel type work, you'll actually need more thana celeron processor.

At that point, a new computer will be less costly and have a lot of new features include a faster front side bus which helps the speed by the internal communications.

The bottom line is what programs are you running and what do you want to run.
You can get a whole new low end system for $400 to $500
that will beat the devil out of your current system.

Of course if you plan to get into more computations, graphics, etc, then pay the $800 to $1100 now and you'll wonder why you waited this long.

to process what?

The computer is OLD and SLOW. I assume that it is an old EMachines or Gateway computer.

The only solution is to either rebuild it yourself (it's not difficult) or buy a new "closed box" system from whatever box store (Best Buy, Circuit City, etc) you choose to allow to rip you off.

You should check spywares and viruses. If you don't have spywares and viruses, then it's time to upgrade RAM.
