I'm thinking of moving to San Francisco and getting a studio apartment for $1,000 to $1,500 in one of the better neighborhoods - any advice about living there? Is the cost of living really high even if you're single, renting, and no car?

I live in SF. I would say maybe $75,000. The better neighborhoods are those without apartments. I do think it is great to live here and if you can manage it you will be glad you did. The SF Muni system is excellent and I have one friend that's never had a car while living here, and she does just fine.

You can check out Craig's List for places to live. If you would consider living outside of the city but within a 1/2 hour driving distance, then places in Marin County, like San Anselmo, are even a better option. The $1500 is a little low even for a studio, but maybe around $1800 - $1900. Check the listings in the SF newspapers.

I make that, I live outside of San Francisco and if I moved to a studio in a "better neighborhood" maybe 1500 to 2000 and rising. YOu'll be alright without a car. I've live in the SF bay area all my life and I never drive their because parking is pricey. You'll have Bart, Muni train, bus, taxis.

My advice: Move somewhere outside of San Francisco, like Fremont or Pleasanton. THe whole bay area is expensive, but your money will get you a little farther outside of SAn francisco and San Jose.

It is either the #1 or #2 most expensive city in the USA to live in. Rent for even a studio apartment in a good location is going to cost much more that $1,500 per month. And salary adjustment? Closer to $100,000.

1500 dollars a month rent for a cramped studio apt.
or
1500 dollars a month mortgage payment on a mansion in Oregon.
Hmm...
I say invest in Oregon and come to SF for long vacations at the 3 very nice affordable Hostels.
The Green Tortise makes runs to Oregon and is really a fun way to travel. You can join midtrip from Oregon. The trek stops at Lassen and Yosemite before comming to SF.

Yes it is very expensive. And there is public transportation but you may find it hard not having a car. SF is made of hills and it's a lot to walk with groceries etc. But yes, even without a car and renting it is very expensive. I live about five minutes from SF and for me it is totally worth the money because it's a great place to live.
