Celebrities are like American "royalty." We fantasize about what it would be like if our lives were like theirs, or sigh with relief that ours are simpler and not out there in the spotlight.
They seem larger-than-life in terms of their lifestyle, travels, relationships, opportunities and screw-ups. We feel as if we "know" them when in fact all we really "know" are their roles.
They provide interest when we're bored. They fill needs within ourselves that we may not even totally understand.

Why the obsession with computers, food, football, March Madness, C-SPAN, or anything else, for that matter? Different things interest different people. Personally, while I'm sorry Ms.Smith died, I wasn't the least interested in her. Living vicariously through the lives of others is the only life some people have.

Having an interest in celebrities is normal, but the obsession many Americans have is the product of brainwashing by the media.

You pretty much answered your own question, it is just that they are celebrities and we as people are fascinated with things in the media that they shove down our throats. If you think about it, it really doesn't matter if it is good or bad news, we just can't seem to get enough when it is continously broadcast.

I dont, i could care less about these people. Except princess diana, she did alot of good work and taught her sons the future kings to be human BUT I DONT obsesss over it, I was sad at that time but I moved on. anna didnt contribute anything
