Since you are a beginner go for the 4 string. Learn to play, first. Then once you think u've mastered it go for a 5 string. Most of the stuff out there (and everything you will play live) can be done on a 4 string. Plus, all the tutorials use 4 string basses.

As a teacher, I would prefer all my students start on a 4 string. You need to crawl before you can run, after all...If you have a teacher lined up who's OK with teaching you on a 5, go for it. The size or thickness difference in the neck is, in my opinion, not worth getting worked up over.

4 string, it's easier to start out with. The 5 string would probably be too 'complex' for a beginner, and the neck would be thicker too.
