Consider a change in shape - not ALL posters HAVE to be a rectangle. What about a triangular poster, a circle, a rhombus??? Think about unusual textures you can add to make it come to life - playing cards sculpted on it? clothes pins attached? fur? feathers? crumpled papers stapled or glued to it......my, we could go on & on. How about what you are using to create text - try cutting text out of a magazine, newspaper & gluing it on. Maybe NO TEXT! The edges of your poster don't HAVE to be flat and smoothe like everyone else's either. What about burnt edges, ragged, jagged, rounded half-circles, hole-punched, folded tabs...
The ideas are endless but truly a fine poster would depend upon your ability to pair what concept you're promoting with the overall visual appearance of the final poster:
If it's a poster in protest - antin-abortion, for example, maybe you want to juxtapose to commonly associated iconic images together on your poster like a knife and a rattle > this would make a huge impact on your viewer (don't ever display a real weapon though unless you want to be personally responsible for it(!).
If it's a poster of information - global warming > I'd probably burn the edges or holes throughout the poster and maybe infuse elements of 'drought' on the surface (glue sand all over like glitter, or chicken bones to speak to decay.
Be free to use your imagination. Have fun. Explore your inner feelings on the subject!

Include something in the poster that represents you, your life, personality, etc. This is what usually makes people stand out.

If youre truly creative, you wouldnt ask this. When you look at a few and you see one that you would say to yourself, "gee, I wouldnt thought of doing that. Where did he or she came up with that?" then you found a true creative genius.
