You know.. honestly, the answer is a really lengthy one that I don't much buy into, though I do think it's interesting. As interesting as I think all end-of-the-world prophecys are.
But all of them have one common link.
They have, every one of them, been wrong.
But.. okay, I'll talk a little about it, because I know the subject pretty well.
The core of this is in the Mayan Calander, a very accurate calander. Yes, better than the one on your wall. This was first discovered in the posession of the Aztec, who got it from the Maya, who got it from the Olmec, who supposedly got it from some other civilization so ancient, no one can remember the name.
The story goes that they got it from a pale skinned, bearded God who went by quetzicotal.. or something. I have too look that name up every time and I'm just not in the mood. It's on Wikipedia if you're that interested. Anyhow, this guy wandered around Centeral America healing people and teaching them. There are also reports by the Inca of a guy of a similar description.
When he left their land, he said he would return and pointed out the date on the Calander, saying he would come from the waters of the East. Now, there is plenty of controvercy about this, but supposedly on that day, Montezuma looked out expectingly and sees what but Cortez's ships sailing in from the east. The normaly warlike Aztec welcome these pale skinned, beared men of the East like Gods allowing Cortez an easy conquest of a few million people with a few hundred soldiers.
Again, not nessicarily the truth.
The end of the age we are presently in now, on the Myan calander is the Winter Solstance, 2012. The Myans were great astronomers and based their calander on the stars. 2012 is when the Earth will align with the center of the Galaxy, what the Myans believe to be the birth cannal of (what they thought was) the Universe. And at that time, demons will pour fourth from there and wash us from the land. The last time an age ended, the world's inhabitants were destroyed by their own creations..
Who knows, maybe it was us?
Anyway, interesting to think about.. I'm not worried.

I have read nothing on it myself. Watched a television documentary on it last night. Basically they are examining the coincidences that have put the Mayan calandar, Merlyns phrophecies, some Danish womans prophecies and Bible prophecies together to come up with 2012 to be the last year of life as we know it. Catastophic things are supposed to happen. The problem with the information I saw was that it is all conjecture. It's kind of like the Bible code thing. Almost anything is possible if you put the right spin on it. I for one will live every day as if it were my last. (I am a Christian and my Bible tells me that we are always to be prepared because Christ will return without warning one day) We shall know the season, but not the date. Not trying to preach. Just thought I would throw that in.

Hmm... 2012... it's a year... and it happens to be a 5 years from now. It also seems to end in an even number thus divisible by 2. Other than that, I've no thoghts on 2012.

Its just a controversy to get people worked up.
And just so everyone knows, Global Warming is already here, and its already affecting the world in drastic ways. Maybe something drastic 'will' happen by 2012.

There is an asteroid that is to come close to earth. there was some scare about it hitting the earth, but further study saw it as a near miss.
