Choose the XP version for now.
Why? The cost of the notebook will be higher than an OS, meaning, you buy a notebook right now with Vista, you are going to have issues with alot of things. Mostly the buisness and gaming aspect of it right now, because alot of the drivers and programs have conflicts. So your new Vista notebook is a pile of junk until Vista gets worked out.
But if you buy a Vista capable notebook with XP on it, you have a working notebook and you can always purchase the upgrade to Vista and save a few bucks while you are waiting for the bugs to work out in VIsta.

Get it with XP. Vista is in the embryo stage right now, and surely will need updates or even Service Packs as more glitches are found. On the other hand, XP with it's updates and Service Packs is pretty stable at this point, and most programs that you might have will run fine with it, and drivers for those programs work fine with XP as well....not so with many programs that are not compatible with Vista. So, if you buy a notebook, get it with XP, and you might want to get it with the option to upgrade to Vista for free at a later time. If so, as another answerer mentioned, don't go with the Home Basic version of Vista..get at least the Home Premium edition. Hope all this helps. Good luck.

Well Vista is basically an service pack for XP, it has been overhyped, however, im using an HP laptop with Vista right now, and I enjoy it over XP, because its more user friendly, both looks and practicality, its kinda hard to find machines with XP on them, most computer/notebook come preinstalled with Vista, however i must warn you DO NOT get the basic Vista edition, because that version is not even worth it, get the Home Premium or Ultimate edition. Vista is a bit of a system hog, but its an improvement over Windows XP.
