Haven't we all experienced the shock of discovering that someone we believed was made of nothing but sunshine, rainbows and rose petals has done something so mean it just takes us back?

My own sister is someone who is constantly smiling, and, usually, kind and upbeat...but - if you cross her - she'd have no trouble at all eating your eyes on toast for lunch.

That isn't strength of character, though. It's just protective coloration....

I think it has less to do with character and more to do with fear.

It is essentially a fear message. It means that the person saying it wants to be kind but they are afraid of the consequences so they feel the need to imply the threat that there may be consequences if they are crossed.

I've often heard it used as a reminder from someone with a job or authority, I may act nice but I am not one of your peers or friends..I have a job or responsibility and the authority to perform it, if you take advantage of this you will find yourself on the losing side. They will stick to their responsibilities even if they go against you..I suppose that's character.
