Use of the Rainbow Flag by the gay community began in 1978 when it first appeared in the San Francisco Gay and Lesbian Freedom Day Parade. Borrowing symbolism from the hippie movement and black civil rights groups, San Francisco artist Gilbert Baker designed the rainbow flag in response to a need for a symbol that could be used year after year. The 6 Colors of the flag are Red for life Orange for healing Yellow for sun Green for nature Blue for harmony Purple for spirit

The Rainbow Flag as we know it today was developed by San Francisco artist Gilbert Baker in 1978. At the time, there was a need for a gay symbol which could be used year after year for the San Francisco Gay and Lesbian Pride Parade. Baker took inspiration from many sources, from the hippies movement to the black civil rights movement, and came up with a flag with eight stripes. Color has always played an important power in the gay right movement- Victorian England symbolized homosexuality with the color green, lavender became popular in the 1960s, and and pink from the pink triangle has caught on as well- and the colors of the gay flag were no different. Baker explained that his colors each stood for a different aspect of gay and lesbian life:
Hot pink for sexuality,
Red for life,
Orange for healing,
Yellow for the sun,
Green for nature,
Blue for art,
Indigo for harmony,
Violet for spirit.

The rainbow reflects our diversity. In addition to the definition of colors mentioned by others, the rainbow as a whole shows that everything is not simply black and white (male/female, yin/yang, etc). Christians are under the impression that we intentionally stole the rainbow (a biblical symbol of God's grace) to heretically mock it and spit on God. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, the Bible itself, by clearly stating that the rainbow is the sign of God's covenant "WITH EVERY LIVING THING", shows that heterosexuals - and particularly Christians - cannot claim exclusive rights to the rainbow. It belongs to all of us, sinners and saints, gays and straights, the good, the bad, and the ugly, whether human or animal or fish or bird or plant, as a gift from God Himself. It is community property.

Funny answer - The 'rainbow flag' symbolizes all of the colours of ecstacy tablets gay guys take at rave parties.
Serious answer - Every tribe has a flag. The colours represent the vibrance, the dual unity and individuality of the gay community, the resilience and diversity of the gay and lesbian community.

Celebrate life because life happens in a circle.
Different people gather for one reason,
To celebrate life and the multitude of Humans.
Some celebrate, the love of a partner,
Some celebrate a child and being a parent,
Some celebrate the sharing of life and community.
Others celebrate our past, present and future.
We are celebrating them now!
We have finally learned to really love!
We learned that we are all destined for heaven,
Or, not one of us, will make it!
We all make it to heaven,
Or no one makes it to heaven!
Don't despair, celebrate!
The next thing you know, we will all be in heaven.

I think it is more "things didn't go so well for you and we don't care what has been in your rear or how scummy you and your friends used to live" so that all the issues are finally a dry newspaper is more what the rainbow thing means to me.

Because all types of fairies make up the rainbow. And I mean fairies with wings, not directed to gays.

Why does the word "gay" mean homosexual when they're not any happier than the rest of us?
They just grabbed up the rainbow idea and stole it, like the word gay.
Additional: People saying that they "borrowed" it from other groups are misusing the word. It's not borrowing if you don't give it back or make it so that others can't use it.
