I'll step up and recommend Dell computers.
The one I'm using is a Dimension 4400 that I bought in 2002 and it's running great...I've never had any hardware or mechanical problems with it.

Definitely one of the best things you can do is have installed as much memory (RAM) as you can afford along with a good Video Card (or add a memory upgrade later on).

Actually if you uninstall all the crap it comes with and leave only the programs you need it will run OK. Not to be compared with a nice IBM though.
